Scholarships

Promising Pathways provides scholarships for higher education and career advancement, supporting hard of hearing students, single parents, and students at the Uganda Nursing School Bwindi (UNSB). Two of these scholarships are hosted on Bold.org, a secure online platform that connects students with tailored funding opportunities, which streamlines applications, manages submissions, and ensures that funds go directly to recipients' schools. The UNSB scholarship is managed through the Kellermann Foundation. Below, you’ll find details on each scholarship, including eligibility requirements and application links.

Hard of Hearing Scholarship

Pursuing post-secondary education is both expensive and challenging for many students. However, research shows that individuals who are hard of hearing are less likely to enroll in or graduate from college and are more likely to experience lower incomes. Additionally, they face the high costs of hearing aids, cochlear implants, and related medical expenses. This scholarship aims to support hard of hearing students as they work toward completing their degrees, ultimately helping them access higher-paying jobs, a brighter future, and the financial ability to afford hearing devices and medical care.

The requirements of this scholarship include: a student who wears a hearing aid or cochlear implant to assist with hearing, is pursuing higher education (including technical programs, two-year college degrees, and four-year college degrees), and has a lower income. To apply, submit your profile and a brief essay that highlights your area of study in school, the obstacles you’ve overcome while attending school as a student who is hard of hearing and the devices and services that have helped you, and your plans and goals are after you finish your degree.

Single Parent Scholarship

Earning a college degree is both expensive and demanding for any student, but single parents face the added challenge of balancing their education with raising children. Financial constraints often make completing a degree even more difficult, leading to lower graduation rates and limited earning potential. However, with financial assistance, single parents can gain the education and credentials needed to secure better-paying jobs, increased opportunities, and a brighter future for both themselves and their children. This scholarship is designed to support low-income single parents who are pursuing higher education, including technical programs, two-year degrees, and four-year degrees, while raising children.

The requirements of this scholarship include: a student who is a single parent and has children under the age of 18 living with them most of the week, is pursuing higher education (including technical programs, two-year college degrees, and four-year college degrees), and is low income. To apply, submit your profile and a brief essay that highlights your area of study in school, the obstacles you’ve overcome while attending as a single parent, and your plans and goals are after you finish your degree.

Uganda Nursing School

In 2023 our family visited the Uganda Nursing School Bwindi (UNSB), located in the same region as the indigenous Batwa people and Bwindi Community Hospital. Uganda remains one of the poorest countries in Africa, with limited access to sustainable jobs and healthcare available to only half of the population. Established in 2013, UNSB is the only advanced-level nursing program serving a rural region of one million people, where the ratio of registered nurses to patients is 1 to 40,000 (compared a to the 1 to 350 ratio in the U.S.). Scholarships for UNSB students not only create life-changing opportunities for them and their families but also help strengthen the region’s healthcare system by training much-needed medical professionals.

Through the Kellermann Foundation, which founded and manages the school, Promising Pathways aims to sponsor one nursing student each year with a $1,500 scholarship, covering a full year of tuition.
